1 hour from Providence. 2 hours from Boston. Worth every mile.
The most direct route. Take I-95 South from Providence, then pick up Route 4 South toward Wakefield and Narragansett. The drive is around 30 miles and typically takes 45–60 minutes. Providence itself is worth an extra day — it's one of New England's most underrated cities, with excellent restaurants and Brown University's beautiful campus.
Take I-95 South through Providence (about 50 miles from Boston) and then follow Route 4 South to Narragansett. The total drive is roughly 80 miles and takes 1.5–2 hours in normal traffic. Summer Friday afternoons can add 30–60 minutes through the Providence metro.
Amtrak runs the Northeast Regional service from Boston's South Station to Providence (45 min). From Providence, you'll need a car — there's no public transit direct to Narragansett. Consider renting a car at the Providence station or taking a rideshare for the final leg.
I-95 North is the highway option — about 180 miles and typically 3.5–4.5 hours depending on traffic. The Connecticut stretch of I-95 is notoriously slow on summer Fridays; consider leaving before 11am or after 7pm to beat the worst of it. Alternatively, Amtrak's Acela or Northeast Regional to Providence dramatically reduces drive time — 3.5 hours by train to Providence, then an easy 1-hour drive.
Beach parking requires a Narragansett town permit for non-residents during summer. Day permits are available at the beach entrance and online in advance. The main Town Beach lot fills by 10am on peak summer days — arrive early or plan to walk from public parking areas. The downtown area has free street parking in the off-season.
